AN ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECT OF INNOVATIVE FARMING PRACTICES ON THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF FARMERS IN SOBA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, KADUNA STATE

    Abstract

This study investigates the impact of modern farming practices on the socio-economic development of farmers in Soba Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The aim is to assess how improved agricultural techniques such as mechanization, irrigation, use of fertilizers, improved seeds, and extension services affect farmers’ productivity, income, and living standards. The study is anchored on the Modernization Theory of Development and Schultz’s Human Capital Theory. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected from 150 farmers across five communities using questionnaires and interviews. The data were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics inform of multiple regression analysis. Findings revealed that modern farming practices significantly enhance productivity and household income while improving access to education, healthcare, and living conditions. However, challenges such as inadequate credit, high input costs, and poor extension support persist. The study concludes that modern farming drives rural development and recommends that government and agricultural institutions intensify mechanization by expanding access to credit and strengthen extension services so as to sustain socio-economic growth among farmers.
