Abstract
This research assesses the contribution of
local entrepreneurship in fostering rural development in Kachia and Kudan Local
Government Areas (LGAs) of Kaduna State, Nigeria. Rural areas often face
significant challenges such as unemployment, poverty, and underdevelopment.
Local entrepreneurship has been identified as a potential catalyst for
addressing these issues by creating employment opportunities, generating
income, and promoting socio-economic growth at the grassroots level.
Transformation theory was adopted to guide the study. The study employs a mixed-methods approach,
combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather
comprehensive data. A sample of 365 local
entrepreneurs, 6community leaders, and 4 government officials was surveyed and
interviewed to understand the nature of entrepreneurship activities, their
contribution to rural development
especially with emphasis on employment generation. Findings suggest that local
entrepreneurship significantly contributes to rural development in Kachia and
Kudan LGAs. Entrepreneurs in these areas engage in various economic activities
such as agriculture, small-scale manufacturing and retail services, thereby
creating employment opportunities and enhancing income levels within the
communities. Based on the above findings, the study recommended among other
things; the need to enhance access to finance and credit facilities for
aspiring entrepreneurs through the establishment of microfinance institutions
and targeted loan schemes.
