Abstract
The paper aimed to analyse the causes and
security challenges of border closure in Nigeria with specific reference to
Magama-Jibia border of Katsina State. Adopting a qualitative research method, the study
collected data through both primary and secondary sources. For the primary data
in-depth interviews using a structured interview guide, with each session
lasting between 19 and 30 minutes were conducted. The responses were analysed
using thematic analysis, and Nvivo software version 12 was employed to assist
in coding and identifying key themes and patterns across the interviews. The
finding revealed that
the 2019 closure of the Magama-Jibia border was primarily motivated by security
concerns particularly the need to combat smuggling and arms trafficking and by
economic goals aimed at promoting local agricultural production and reducing
reliance on imported goods and security officials at the Magama-Jibia border
experienced multiple operational and structural challenges in enforcing safety
measures and combating smuggling during the 2019–2023 border closure period.
Topmost among these were insecurity, border porosity, and insufficient
logistical support including a lack of operational vehicles, modern equipment,
and adequate personnel. As such the paper recommended that the Nigerian government should invest
in strengthening the operational capacity of border security agencies by
providing adequate manpower, modern surveillance equipment, operational
vehicles, and consistent training to enhance their ability to detect and respond
to smuggling activities and other security threats effectively, particularly in
porous and high-risk borders like Magama-Jibia.
