Abstract
Traditional authorities were established to play a vital role in society. This study examined the roles of traditional rulers in achieving stable security in Nigeria. In the pre-colonial era, traditional rulers were regarded as royal fathers in their various domains and performed effectively in accomplishing firm development. However, with the advent of colonialism and democracy, the role of traditional rulers became less recognized in the democratic system. This study is qualitative in nature; data were obtained from secondary sources and systematically reviewed, including books, journals, magazines, and published and unpublished documents. The study found that traditional institutions played a significant role in the pre-colonial era. However, with the advent of British colonial rule and democracy, their power became less recognized in democratic movements and decision-making because traditional rulers were marginalized and had less power in society. The study recommends that in order to achieve steady security and state development, traditional institutions need to be independent in discharging their duties; they also need to serve their people first, rather than the people serving them.
