EFFECT OF PARENT INCOME ON GIRL CHILD ENROLMENT IN SOME SELECTED UBE SCHOOLS IN SABON GARI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KADUNA STATE

    Abstract

This study examines the effect of parent income on girl child enrolment in some selected UBE Schools in Sabon Gari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. A total of 312 respondents comprising of Principals and Head Teachers, School Based Management Committee, Parents and students of some selected UBE Schools which include LGEA Primary School Kwangila, Government Secondary School, Sarkin Kogi Primary School Muchia and Government Secondary School Muchia. The study employed the mixed research design and data was analyzed using the Statistical Package of Social Science version 23. Some of its findings include that: parents with higher income tend to enroll their girl child into schools more than parents with lower income. Based on this finding it was recommended there is need for government/public schools to collaborate with organizations to provide scholarships, grants, or other forms of support to ease the financial burdens on families, thereby increasing access to education and empowering girls to pursue their educational aspirations and break the cycle of parent income and this has results to students of lower income not to be in school but rather engage into hawking and doing menial jobs. Secondly, Parents are encouraged to prioritize the education of the girl child and to make every effort within their reach to facilitate their enrollment. This includes ensuring the payment of registration fees and provision of necessary educational materials. Given that the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Schools do not require significant financial commitments and that the government has implemented free primary and secondary education, it is essential for parents to leverage on these policies to support their daughters’ access to education.
