Ethical Conduct in Social Science Research: Benefits and Challenges

    Abstract

    Ethics is closely related to moral integrity, and values associated with appropriate methods and techniques applied for collection of reliable and authentic information that ensure the trust worthy research findings. This article is based on descriptive theoretical research and focused on ethical principles in social research. The paper is an attempt to examine the possibilities of implementation of ethical principles, limitations, obstacles, and challenges in social research. It was revealed in this paper that, to have a trustworthy and valid research outcome, social science researchers must apply ethical rules and standard ethical considerations in social research are critical as they help to determine the difference between acceptable and unacceptable behaviors. The essential ethical considerations in social research ethics remains among others professional competence, integrity, processional and scientific responsibility, respect for research participants' rights, dignity and diversity, and social responsibility of social researchers. It is our recommendation in this study that, to achieve essential ethical considerations in social science research ethics professional associations, and research institutions in Nigeria must be active in enforcing those ethical standards and guidelines especially by issuing ethical ethic clearance form.
