Abstract
This study
investigated the effect of perceived organizational support on organizational
citizenship behavior among lecturers at Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic
(WUFPOLY), Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria. A quantitative cross-sectional survey design
was employed, with 711 academic staff forming the study population. Guided by
the Krejcie and Morgan (1970) sample size table, 248 respondents were required;
however, 245 valid questionnaires were returned and analyzed using simple
linear regression in SPSS Version 27 at the 0.05 significance level. The result
revealed that perceived organizational support significantly and positively
predicted organizational citizenship behavior. Perceived organizational support
accounted for 17.7% of the variation in organizational citizenship behavior (R
= .421, R² = .177, Adjusted R² = .174), indicating that lecturers who perceived
greater organizational support were more likely to exhibit behaviors that went
beyond their formal job responsibilities. The finding further suggest that, although
organizational support plays an important role in promoting organizational
citizenship behavior, much of lecturers' discretionary effort is influenced by
other factors beyond organizational support. The paper concludes that
strengthening organisational support can enhance lecturers' willingness to
contribute beyond their prescribed duties, but such efforts should be
complemented by initiatives that foster professional commitment and a positive
work environment. Accordingly, it recommends that WUFPOLY management adopt a
holistic staff-support strategy by promoting fairness in reward and promotion
practices, improving staff welfare, encouraging participative decision-making,
recognizing outstanding contributions, and fostering a collegial work environment
that sustains lecturers' commitment and organizational citizenship behavior.
