Abstract
The role of militias in contemporary conflicts and their potential contributions to peace and democratic stability is a complex and multifaceted issue. This study specifically analyzes the role of Katsina State CWC, in addressing insecurity and promoting democratic stability in Faskari and Jibia Local government areas of Katsina state. The increasing prevalence of violent crimes, banditry, and communal clashes in Katsina State has necessitated the formation of local security outfits and sponsored by the state. This study is set to assess their contribution towards improvement of security and stability of democracy in different areas from 2024 to 2026. The study employs a qualitative approach, drawing on existing literature and specialist interview to evaluate the effect of the CWC in enhancing security and its implications for democratic stability. The study is therefore guided by these questions: What are the causes of insecurity in Katsina State under democratic dispensation? How does the insecurity affects democratic stability? And what roles does the state militia play to promote security and democratic stability? The research employs Social Conflict Theory as its framework with specific reference to Human Needs, Conflict and Peace strand. It is finally discovered that the causes of insecurity in Katsina State are complex rooted in socio-economic and political factors; the interplay of poverty, unemployment, and weak governance has created an environment conducive to the emergence of armed groups. The CWC in specific has made significant contributions in reducing crime rates and securing socio-economic, liberal and state institutions. Whereas democracy becomes more stable as liberal institutions became protected from the threats posed by insecurity. Conversely, challenges such as lack of modern weaponries, constitutional recognition, politicization, and in some cases arbitrary use of power remain critical concerns. It is therefore recommended that, a comprehensive approach that prioritizes tackling the underlying causes of insecurity, community engagement, economic development, and strengthening the state militia with modern communication technology and efficient arms should be effected.
