Abstract
This study examined the impact of National
Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) on the medical welfare of University of Calabar
workers. One null hypothesis and one research questionswere formulated each in
line with the objective of the study. The study reviewed some related
literature on NHIS and adopted the Political System Theory propounded by David
Easton in 1953 and the welfare theory postulated by Vilfredo Pareto and co. in
1897. Survey research designed and inferential statistics were adopted for the methodology
via the use of SPSS version 27.0.1. Both Quantitative and qualitative data
analysis technique were employed as primary and secondary data were both used.
The population of the study was made-up of the 800 principal enrollees of NHIS
at the University of Calabar Medical Centre and the sample size was 266
respondents determined by Taro Yamane formula. The findings revealed that there
is no significant provision of drugs for the Unical workers medical welfare.
The study recommended that; NHIA should have a policy adjustment that
would review drugs provision henceforth
to ensure that it aligns with the enrollees’ medical needs because there was no
direct correlation between the two variables so as to curtail the excesses of
the heath management organizations and other collaborating agencies.
